Lately we haven’t shared a whole lot about GMC, but in reality this is one of our favorite brands of automobiles. The GMC bran is one of the longest-running brands in the General Motors company. It is the second-largest of the four GM brands in U.S. sales and is known mostly for pickup trucks, SUVs and now crossover vehicles. We checked out the GM media website and found some fun facts about this iconic truck brand that we would like to share with you. - GMC’s name turns 100 this year (2012), a feat that Chevy recently celebrated in November. In 1912, Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was merged with two others- Reliance and Randolph to become GMC.
- The first truck to ever reach the summit of Pikes Peak, a 14,110 foot climb, was a GMC predecessor. This Rapid F-406 B did it on August 1, 1909.
- GMC would be the tenth largest automaker in the United States if it were a standalone manufacturer. This is in terms of total sales in 2011.
- GMC was one of the first brands to build some of the world’s earliest electric vehicles from 1912-1917. These vehicles were trucks with single-digit model names denoting load capacity.
- The GMC Denali currently outsells the entire product lines of other premium automakers including Land Rover, Jaguar and Porsche.
- GMC completed the engineering and production of the 1936 Parade of Progress vans and the 1941 Futurliners, which toured the country carrying mobile road shows.
- GMC and the Denali Trim are two of the fastest growing nameplates in the U.S. The sales increased 22 percent and 91 percent in 2011 alone.
- GMC manufactured 584,000 military vehicles during World War II, including the amphibious “Duck” and the CCKW-353.
- Through the first 11 months of 2011, the GMC Sierra outsold the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan, with 40,000 units to spare. This is GMC’s top selling model.
10. From 1973-1978, GMC produced motorhomes in 23 and 26-foot lengths. These appeared in the 1981 movie, Stripes and the 1996 blockbuster, Twister.
