Kia Motors America (KMA) has been working hand-in-hand with the U.S. Environmental Protection (EPA) after finding out that several newer Kia vehicle models have been given incorrect fuel economy ratings. KMA will be voluntarily adjusting fuel economy ratings for roughly 900,000 vehicles that were built between 2011-2013 and were sold through October 31, 2012.
KMA believes this error stems back to Korea, during their testing operations. To kick off their corrective actions Kia has voluntarily relabeled all of the fuel ratings for vehicles in Kia showrooms across the globe. On average, Kia vehicles will lose roughly 3 percent fuel efficiency, or roughly one mile-per gallon.
That’s not all KMA is doing to correct this mix-up. They also are installing a complete reimbursement program as well, for those affected by this. Current/former Kia owners affected by this will receive a customized debit card that will reimburse them for the difference between the EPA fuel economy rating. This will be achieved by calculating fuel prices in each customers area and then tracking how many miles were driven in their specific Kia vehicle. KMA also plans to add an additional 15 percent to this figure as well.
Owners of the affected Kia vehicles will be able to refresh their KMA given debit card for as long as they own their Kia vehicle and former owners will be reimbursed for the duration that they owned their Kia.
Dr. W.C. Yang Kia, and Hyundai’s, CTO for Research & Development, discussed this matter and offered his apologies, stating that, “I sincerely apologize to all affected Hyundai and Kia customers, and I regret these errors occurred. Following up on the EPA’s audit results, we have taken immediate action to make the necessary rating changes and process corrections.”
