If you’ve been shopping for a car this year, there’s a good chance you’ve noticed that a lot of dealership lots have been empty or featuring a very reduced amount of available vehicles compared to years prior. This is all stemming from the global pandemic that we’ve been going through over the past couple of years, but hopefully things will begin turning around in the near future. Keep reading to learn the specifics of why there aren’t as many new cars available as there used to be.

Why aren’t there as many new vehicles available?

First of all, the automotive industry isn’t the only one to be affected by what we’re about to touch on, as other major sectors such as consumer electronics and power have been hit hard as well. The root cause of there being fewer new vehicles available is a result of a global chip shortage affecting automotive manufacturers and, as mentioned, many other areas across the country and globe.

These chips help manufacturers build their vehicles and provide them with the technology that they’re supposed to have, so a shortage of chips means they can’t build as many vehicles as quickly as they used to. But don’t worry, there has been a slow and steady shift by some manufacturers away from the old model of building a bunch of vehicles to ship to dealerships and towards having those dealers or their customers directly order the models they want specifically.

This way, manufacturers know they’re building vehicles that have already been paid for and will almost certainly make it to a consumer rather than risk some models sitting around on the lot without being sold.
